Main Task: 500 Word Plot

- Whilst this document would usually be uploaded on a word document the use of annotations does not enable that...

500 Word Plot:

Main Task: Script

As this is a music video, for my script I have used the lyrics of the song, on the previous blog post I go step by step the plot of our music video, this is key points of the song which I wanted to highlight which was important in our media product or someone getting into the "wrong" gang/ the wrong influences. Normally I use slideshare in order to show my word documents, however I found it that my annotations do not come up so in order to show my annotations of parts of the song, I had to use a screenshot of my work instead. Also, this post would usually be uploaded in a word document, however the use of annotations does not enable this.

Main Task/Ancillary Tasks: Location Scouting Sheets/Inspiration

Location Scouting Sheets:

Initial Location Scouting:

Other Possible Locations:
1. On a double decker bus- this way we will be able to shot the first couple of rows of seating and not include others who don't want to be in the shoot- In order to shoot here we will have to email the bus company for permission.

2. Alley- this will be a local alley within Harlow so it will be accessible to both of us in the group.

Ancillary Tasks:
- For my ancillary tasks (magazine advert and digipak) I intend on using the location of the park to shoot my images - thus, the location scouting/inspiration here can be used for my ancillary tasks.

Main Task: Textual Analysis

Main Task: Time Analysis

JAWS - BAD COMPANY

The music video to Bad Company featured many jump cuts, meaning the timed analysis took quite a bit of time for me to complete. This video helped to inspire my idea of drug/alcohol abuse within youth subcultures due to the heavy featuring of the girl drinking throughout the video, and the use of editing that helps to portray this; for example, the constant over laying affect that is used throughout the video, hinting towards distorted vision and giving the viewer a sense that the girl doesn't understand whats going on around her. I also liked the setting of a desolate urban setting, and the sees of boredom within youth that this video suggests. Completing a timed analysis for this particular music video was helpful for me and my group as it helped us pick up on key features/shots/editing techniques that are used.

WOLF ALICE - FLUFFY
The music video for Wolf Alice's Fluffy combines a mixture of narrative and performance, this is an element that drew me into this particular video; it tells the story of two teens who are influenced by a youth subculture and begin to behave recklessly. This video helped to influence my groups reckless 'behaviour within youth' theme due to the consistent narrative throughout, the viewer is able to understand and follow the plot, thus feeling a connection with the video. The over laying affect is also used within this video, and the use of jump cuts between past and present is also something that I found particularly interesting, reminding the audience of how things have changed. The use of constant flashing lights towards the end of music video and constant jump cuts suggesting distortion and perhaps even drunkenness was an editing technique that my group had never considered, thus making the process of completing a timed analysis extremely useful for us.

PALMA VIOLETS - WE FOUND LOVE
Though throughout the music video for Palma Violet's We Found Love there isn't a consistent narrative, there are definitely elements that have helped to influence our music video. The use of red/blue colouring is an affect that is particularly influential to our video idea's, giving the music video a 'night club' or 'gig' feel to it with the use of filters. I also liked the constant use of the dolly, giving the viewers a first hand view of the reckless behaviour of youths, though this video does use constant jump cuts (like Fluffy and Bad Company) this helped show us that in order to capture the reckless behaviour of youths jump cuts aren't the only way that you can show a 'fast' life style.

Main Task: Pre Production Focus Group

Our Focus Group:

Focus Group Results:

Importance of our focus group:
For our research using a focus group was essential as it is an easy and successful way to measure  and collect information to evaluate within the making process of our production. As we are students ourselves and study media, it was fairly easy to find a group of people who share a common interest in music videos/the production of music videos who would be happy to take part in our making process - these fellow students were also the type of people we would be marketing our music video towards (16-18 year olds, interest in indie/pop music, mixture of males and females etc). Whilst some of the topics we were discussing were arguably controversial (feminism, drugs and alcohol abuse) it was important for us to make sure we are targeting the right group of people and for them to not be offended by any themes within our production, luckily to which they were not. The focus group was also successful in helping us evaluate ideas that we had not thought of before, for example some of the editing techniques that were discussed we had not thought of (e.g Dylan’s idea of the overlaying technique), but further it helped us evaluate ideas that we had already discussed and see if they would be successful with people of our target market. Our focus group of all methods of research was particularly important to us as we are aware that it gives individuals the opportunity to really engage with our questions and the ideas that we have about our production, there is no word limit and the candidates are not restricted by writing their opinions - they have the opportunity to delve into their opinions and feelings towards our music video ideas. The focus group idea was also useful in saving money within our production budget - at college we have access to the media studio, camera/camera equipment use and a range of students willing to partake, which saved us a lot of time and money.

Research and Planning

Primary Research:
- Primary Research is a new research, carried out to answer specific issues or questions. It can involve questionnaires, surveys or interviews with individuals or small groups.

Secondary Research:
– Secondary research makes use of information previously researched for other purposes and publicly available. This is also known as 'desk research'. Secondary research includes published research reports in a library, surveys or the Internet.

Methods of Primary Research:
Questionnaire
How many people do you want to complete the questionnaire
You will need to explain why you targeted these people (Age, gender or some other defining factor)

Carefully think through your approach “open questions allow individuals to offer their opinion”. “Closed Questions generate a more defined response"

Your research planning will also include and analysis of your initial ideas

(a)Evaluation of the three exam briefs and list ideas that you could do for each. Also consider the strengths and weaknesses of each brief and why you chose a particular brief.
(b)Generate ideas for a particular exam brief:
Originality test?  In what way does your media product Use, Develop, or Challenge the forms and conventions of a real media product.

Interviews
–Interviews can be done with individuals or groups.
–You might consider recording the interview
–Carefully think through your approach create questions with your interview subject in mind….
Textual Analysis
This is your personal analysis on the study of media texts
You might also compare your response to the style or messages within a media text to that of others.

Ideals For a Promotional Package For The Release of an Album

Digipak Examples:

1. The XX - Coexist
This album cover by The XX really interested me, I like the contrast of colours between the plain white back ground and the bold colourful X. I think that a cover like this could link in with some of our ideas, such as the Drugs idea due to the surreal look of the X surrounded by the blank whiteness - it could show the effects of drug, which are essentially negative thus the X acts as a warning, telling people to stay away.

2. Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, Thats What Im Not
This album cover by Arctic Monkeys would also fit in with some of our themes such as Youth Subcultures and Drug Abuse - I especially like the actual CD itself and the fact that its covered in cigarettes, I feel like this could help influence our CD cover. The use of a man on the front cover smoking a cigarette too is interesting, and perhaps this could fit in with our theme but instead a youth smoking a cigarette. Whilst I thought that bright colours would help further the theme of drugs or subcultures, the dulled down grey and black and white tones help give the digpak and gritty feel.

3. Bombay Bicycle Club - A Different Kind Of Fix
This album cover by Bombay Bicycle Club  is really interesting, I really like the artwork on it and the features of the human bodies. I think that this cover could relate to all 3 of our themes, for example Drugs - this could help show the effect of drugs and the effect they have on the brain (e.g colourful etc), Youth Subcultures - it could help show the fun colourful side of youth, Feminism - it could help show how under the skin, regardless of gender, were all the same.
